Them’s bullets! I thought to myself. And I kept running. When I reached a clump of trees I took cover immediately and started shaking all over. Those bastards are shooting at me and trying to kill me! What seemed like a minute of fear was probably only a few seconds, and then it kicked in. I instinctively raised my M-16 and fired away, emptying the twenty-round clip. Bullets were zinging through the air all over the place. This…was combat! In 1966, the son of a mild-mannered ex-Marine sharpshooter was a manager at an amusement park in San Jose, CA. Warren Weitzel received his invitation from the government to participate in the ongoing conflict in Vietnam. The Army wasn’t what he was expecting, but Weitzel manages to combine his life training with the Army’s training, and survived for a year “in country”. And so here are his observations, good and bad, as a sergeant in a combat platoon.

Warren shares some of his Vietnam experiences with us and for those who have served, it is quite real. You can tell he is having a difficult time dealing with these memories, even today. He discovered a part of himself that he was not aware of when he became a soldier, and although he is a mild-mannered gentleman today, he was hell on earth in combat. No attempt at a body count is made, but the reader soon understands that Warren was doing the job of a soldier every day and night. He has a high regard for the combat soldier (what they call a war fighter today) and knows the proper place for a support troop, as well. This book is a great insight into what war does to a man, but it will probably only be fully understood by those to whom it has happened. I knew Warren after he was mustered out, and was deeply surprised by the transformation he made. He comes across like Wally Cox in civilian life, but as a man Rambo would have feared when he wore the uniform. I think this is an excellent read for those who have been in uniform, as well as those who are thoughtful enough to understand what is being said between the lines in "Tally-Ho Green."Product details

TallyHo Green Warren P Weitzel 9781605946610 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed Warren Weitzel's Tally-Ho Green. His description added a unique perspective of humor to a difficult time in our history. It also shed much light on the daily events and how much was required from our 9th Infantry. I thank Warren for his honor and service to America and for his latest efforts in putting the memories to paper.
This is the real story of having a 11 B - "Eleven Bravo" M.O.S., being a `grunt', `boonie rat' and `ground pounder'. Sgt. Weitzel is the real deal. I was reminded of " '66-`67" all over again and my memories reinforced. Thanks Sgt. for your service and "welcome home". P.H., 1st and 2nd Bn., 503rd Inf., 173rd Abn. Bde., (Sep.). Bien Hoa, 5-`66/5-'67.
I liked everything about this book.
VERY interesting stories about the Vietnam War
and what it was like to be there.
Warren Weitzel's book gives us a look into war. I know that's been done many times, but this specifically gives us a look at a type of fighting most of us, heck almost nobody has any knowledge of. This may be the kind of fighting our fathers, and or, fiends participated in and have been hesitant, to say the least, about sharing with us. Now we may understand why.
This may not be the most eloquent book you've ever read, but it will put you in the shoes of a combat soldier who was in the thick of it in Viet Nam. It maybe help you understand why so many vets have had so little to say about their time there, and why they were different when they returned home.
Warren has shared an important part of his life in this book. I worked for Warren just months after his return from the war and now for the first time I believe I understand some of what he, and others who have been in similar situations, went through. I now know why he was so "no nonsense" in what he expected from those around him. I didn't get it back in 1968.
You will have to wade through some personal messages and relationships as you learn about Warren, but that may help you understand him, and that time better, and is well worth your trouble.
Sgt.Weitzel was a combat infantryman in the tough 9th Infantry Division in the jungles of Viet Nam when the fighting was its most intense and critical. This is not a book of political statements regarding the controversial Viet Nam war. So, no matter what a reader's political leanings or opinions are about that war, this book is worth reading. Unlike any of the Viet Nam war movies we've seen, this book is the real thing--no Hollywood make-believe here. Only one of every soldier in the 9th Division was a combatant and Weitzel was one of them 24/365. He has written about his training and his time fighting in the jungles because of the strong urgings of his brother, as it was not his intention to ever write or even to talk about his experiences. But we the readers benefit from the fact that he finally gave in to his brother's wishes and wrote "Tally-Ho Green." When you have finished this book you will have an idea of what it is really like to be a combat soldier and a better idea of what it is to be in the fiercest thick of it. Warren Weitzel writes with clarity, integrity and honesty and his book is a DARNED GOOD READ!
Warren Weitzel is a man to respect, and a man you're going to like.
I just read Tally Ho-Green in one sitting. To say it draws the reader in would be an understatement. It is the story of how one man navigated the journey from the most idyllic and innocent world (that of Frontier Village Amusement Park) to an unimaginable world that was the polar opposite and, thankfully, back again. It is both starkly real and funny at the same time. The reader knows that this is a first person account, so knows the author will survive the dangers he writes about, but that doesn't make it any less riveting. At times, it is edge of your seat, lip bitingly, suspenseful. At times I laughed out loud. My favorite quotes involve references to "yucky leeches" and the truly inaccurate description "simple-minded sergeant with an amusement-park background." I found myself tearing up at the honest accounts of myriad of situations, but most of all at a mother's reaction to seeing her son safely home.
Full disclosure I know the author, he was my first boss and is a man I have always greatly admired and respected. I realize the courage it took for this very private man to write this account and I am grateful that he did. I hope more men who served in Viet Nam can find a way to write to tell their experiences. If they could perhaps it might help resolve some of the strong feelings about the war that has scarred our generation especially those who served (most by `special invitation' as the author calls it. This is not a political story; it is a very human and very honest one.
I think this book is a "must read" for all, but most especially for those who served and for those of us who waited, and worried, and wanted the war to end so all the soldiers could come home.
